Coco Chanel

A Registered Therapy Dog

Meet Coco

Coco Chanel

Hi! My Name is Coco Chanel. I am a Shih Tzu puppy that lives with Claire and Ken in Marshfield, MA. Claire and I are a registered therapy dog and reading partnership team that focuses primarily on visiting with children in Boston and south of the city.

I love playing with my toys, napping in the sun, riding in the car and eating! My favorite place in the world is the beach because, I can run in the sand, roll around in smelly things, and play with all of my doggie friends.

There is more info about us below.

Hugs and Kisses,

Claire McAvoy and Coco Chanel are a registered therapy dog and reading partner team certified through Dog B.O.N.E.S (Dogs Building Opportunities for Nurturing and Emotional Support). We visit hospital, schools, and rehabilitation centers. The goal is to bring a little bit of fun into people’s lives through hands on visits with Coco. She provides companionship, comfort and unconditional love to patients as they recuperate. Studies have shown that therapy dog visits help patients decrease loneliness, lower blood pressure, and help motivate speech and movement therapy.

Past Therapy Visits

Claire and Coco Chanel have visited with children at a variety of  hospitals, schools, libraries, and kid friendly places in Massachusetts including the NNICU unit at Franciscan Children’s Hospital in Brighton, the Children’s Museum in Boston, the Ventress Library in Marshfield, the Reading Library, and Derby Academy in Hingham. We have also visited a variety of facilities that cater to our senior friends at the Jewish Rehabilitation Center in Jamaica Plain, Evans Park Assisted Living in Newton, and The Marshfield Senior Center.

Reading Partnership Certification

Being certified by the Reading Partnership Program allows children to practice their reading skills to Coco at schools and libraries. The goal is to help improve the literary skills of children, reduce self-consciousness, and enhance self-esteem. We have participated in reading programs in Marshfield and Reading, MA.

Massachusetts Laws Regarding Therapy Work

Recently we were invited to the New England School of Law to discuss the Massachusetts House Bill 1499, which allows judges to include animals in restraining orders in cases of domestic abuse. We were also participated in a panel discussion about the legal rights of therapy and service dogs.
